Student U., started by Mary Williams (UNC '07) and Dan Kimberg (Duke '07) was honored as Durham's 2009 Nonprofit Business of the Year at the Business Excellence Awards. Dan serves as Student U.'s executive director.
Student U., a collaborative effort of five organizations -- the Durham Public Schools, the private Durham Academy, and UNC, Duke and N.C. Central universities, grew out of a proposal Dan created in Tony Brown's social entrepreneurial class. Brown now serves as President of the Robertson Scholars Program.
The mission of Student U. is twofold: to inspire Durham middle school students to take education into their own hands and to motivate high school and college students to pursue careers in public education.
